PHOTOBOOTHS IN MOVIES & TV

Mission: Impossible: "Operation 'Heart'"

Directed by Leonard Horn, U.S.

Aired October 22, 1967 (Season 2, Episode 7)

This episode features the second unique photobooth-based opening in "Mission: Impossible," the first with series figurehead Peter Graves. Graves, as James Phelps, drives down a street, gets out of his car, and crosses the street to a photobooth. He gets in, draws the rubberized curtain, and sits down. He inserts, a quarter, the flashes go off, and he inserts a key into a small space below the camera. He retrieves the dossier and listens to the recording, which then self-destructs.

This same opening, with an insert shot for the dossier and photos and different audio track for the tape, is used in Season 2, Episode 18, "The Emerald," directed by Michael O'Herlihy (1/21/68).
