Sure you could make your own film based booth. Just buy a 35mm film camera, load it up with Kodak tmax B&W film and take some photos using a self timer. develope the film in a darkroom and then cut the negatives into four strips and make contact sheets onto fiber based black and white paper. Pretty much any closet is going to work as a dark room. If you must have the original texture of the photo paper than simply buy the paper from photome and by the chemicals as well. I think the paper is a positive paper so you'll need to make contact sheets using a reversal process film or chemical system. kodak makes a reversal system for their tmax films I used it once ten years ago or so and it is not that hard to do in a kitchen sink Or you can simply send the film off to a lab, but that will cost an arm and a leg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reversal_film

Digital is better than film based dip and dunk machines in many ways, the pictures tend to be clearer, there are no chemical stains and you can print on ANYTHING. metal, fabric water color paper, etc with an inkjet printer and the right media. If you have some photoshop skills you can even make sloppy boarders and other vintage effects. While a digital system might set you back a Grand to start out with, and a film based system can basically be had for the cost of a 35mm slr and a tripod and flash say $300 in the long run over a year the cost of developing the film will be very high.

I am an artist located in los angeles, ca. I use photo booths as my medium, and am quickly running out of options. I am limited in what I can do in a public photo booth, and the projects I find myself wanting to do are either illegal or not logically possible to do in public. I looked to see if I could purchase an old b&w booth, but I don't have the $7,000 to purchase one. I am trying to figure out how I can make my own dip and dunk b&w booth, maybe just purchasing the internal parts and building my own booth? would that work? where could I get the parts? The other though I had was having one donated to me for a year, and then given back to the owner, or getting an artist grant and renting one for a year or purchasing one.... I need some help from you guys, and after looking at this site over the years, I know that you are the only other die hard photo booth purists like myself out there. The only thing that the photos MUST be is dip and dunk. I want the original strip, not digital (unless someone has finally figured out how to get the original quality - texture and all- out of a digital booth). Thank you so much! - Rebecca
